PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas diffusion electrode having electrode activity nearly equal to a conventional one by using a comparatively inexpensive catalyst metal, its manufacturing method, and a fuel cell and an electrolytic cell for sodium chloride using the gas diffusion electrode. PSOLUTION: In the gas diffusion electrode containing a porous base material, a catalyst carried by the porous base material, and a hydrophobic material, the catalyst is constituted of one kind or more of metals and/or metal compounds selected from Sr, Ru, and Ir. These metals are inexpensive compared with platinum, and although it is slightly inferior to platinum in terms of an oxygen overvoltage, they have stability and are high in practicality.
