PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate such a weak point that carbon is made to grow by a porous catalyst and the grown carbon increases pressure loss or a gas passage is blocked by a vessel when a lower hydrocarbon such as methane is directly cracked by using the porous catalyst to produce hydrogen and carbon. PSOLUTION: The catalyst is obtained by depositing a catalytic material on a porous carrier and used for producing high-purity hydrogen and nano-size functional carbon by directly cracking the lower hydrocarbon. The carrier has such a function that the carrier is expanded/deformed analogously by the accumulation of the carbon produced by the direct cracking reaction to restrain the increase of the pressure loss and the clogging. When this catalyst is used, methane, or the like, can be reformed stably for a long time and a small-sized domestic fuel cell system from the process of which COSB2/SBis not discharged can be manufactured.
