PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for controlling the meandering of a strip in a tandem mill by which the meandering of a strip is effectively prevented without being affected by working environment such as fume and coolant for rolling and without generating the deformation of the base material of the strip. PSOLUTION: The controlling apparatus of the meandering of the strip is provided with a ratio calculating means 4 for determining difference tension ΔTSBi/SB(=TWS-TDS) between the tension TWS on the work side of the strip on the outlet side of a rolling stand 1 and the tension TDS on the drive side of the strip, also determining the total tension TSBi/SB(=TWS+TDS) which is the sum of the tension TWS on the work side of the strip and the tension TDS on the drive side of the strip and calculating the ratio ΔTSBi/SB/TSBi/SBof the difference tension ΔTSBi/SBto the total tension TSBi/SBand a leveling controlling means 5 for performing the leveling control of the rolling stand 1 so that the ratio ΔTSBi/SB/TSBi/SBof the difference tension ΔTSBi/SBto the total tension TSBi/SBis within a specified range.
