PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To permit natural character input from the left to the right to the handwritten character recognizing device without fixing input areas by character kinds and to correctly recognize even an ambiguous character present between different character kinds. ;SOLUTION: Input areas for four characters for successively inputting handwritten characters are arrayed on a touch panel 15 in the right-left direction and the input areas for handwritten characters sectioned on the touch panel 15 are set as a KANJI (Chinese character) preferential recognition area 13A1, a HIRAGANA (cursive form of Japanese syllabary) preferential recognition area 13A2, a KATAKANA (square form of Japanese syllabary) preferential recognition area 13A3, and an alphanumeric character preferential recognition area 13A4. Here, the similarities of candidate characters retrieved from a dictionary data memory according to the handwritten characters inputted to the input areas 13A1 to 13A4 are increased in priority as recognized candidate characters by adding a certain additional point value to the similarities of candidate characters of the character kinds recognized preferentially in the input areas and arrayed and displayed in the decreasing order of the similarities.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
