PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound serving as a monomer component of polymeric liquid crystals affordable with large torque by external force such as electric field and quick in responsiveness. ;SOLUTION: This new compound is represented by formula I (R1 is H or methyl; R2 is a 1-22C alkyl; A1 is a 1-18C alkylene; X is Cl, Br or I), e.g. N-(methacryloyloxymethyl)-4-(5-metyl-1,3-diox-2-yl)pyridinium bromide. The compound of formula I is obtained by the following steps: a haloalkyl compound of the formula R2X is first reacted with a malonic diester compound to form the corresponding monoalkyl malonic diester compound of formula II (R3 is a 1-3C alkyl), which is then reduced into the corresponding 2-alkyl-1,3- propanediol compound, which, in turn, is reacted with pyridine-4-aldehyde to form a compound of formula III, which is finally reacted with a (meth)acrylic haloalkyl compound of formula IV.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
