PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform stable recording/reproducing by detecting optimal conditions from retried reproducing/recording conditions when an error occurs in a reproducing or recording operation, and reflecting these conditions on next recording/reproducing conditions.;SOLUTION: When reproduction is normally performed during data reproduction from a medium, a read retry processing part 68 changes the intensity of a laser beam and the intensity of a reproduction magnetic field to respective prepared stages for performing reproduction again. A reproduction condition changing part 70 which memorizes the number of sectors to be reproduced per command from a host device, counts the number of sectors to be reproducible at each stage when retry occurs, presets a coefficient for each stage, and changes default reproduction conditions from the sum total of the product of the coefficients and the counted number of reproducible sectors.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
