PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To permit kernel calculation using a necessary feature by automatically selecting the necessary feature (partial structure) from all possible features without minding the size of a structure.;SOLUTION: A device for calculating a discrete kernel function with a background selection function is provided with a partial structure extraction part 12 for extracting a partial structure u from discrete objects A, B; a chi-square calculation part 13 for calculating a chi-square value on the extracted partial structure u; a feature selection part 14 for selecting an effective feature based on a statistic value on the discrete objects A, B, by comparing the calculated chi-square value with a threshold value; and a kernel calculation part 15 for calculating, by recursive calculation, a kernel value representing the similarity between the discrete objects A, B so that only an effective feature will be added to a final kernel value, by referring to a determination result obtained by the feature selection part 14.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
