PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hetero-granular high electric resistance magnetic thin film which has large saturation magnetization and a low saturation magneto- striction constant and can be suitably used as the magnetic core material of magnetic heads. ;SOLUTION: A magnetic thin film having a fine magnetic particle phase containing iron and cobalt, and a ceramic grain boundary phase containing samarium and oxygen contains samarium exceeding the quantity required for the formation of samarium oxide which constitutes the ceramic grain boundary phase. The excessive amount of the samarium exists in the fine magnetic particle phase. The magnetic thin film has a composition expressed by [Fe100-xCox]ySmz.[Sm2O3]100-(y+z) (0≤x≤80, 50≤y≤80, and 0≤z≤10), and the fine magnetic particle phase and ceramic grain boundary phase are respectively expressed by [Fe100-xCox]ySmz and [Sm2O3]100-(y+z).;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
