PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of a pseudo signal in an endoscope and to provide a clear display picture. PSOLUTION: A luminance difference with adjacent pixels in respective pixels of image data is quantized within a prescribed range. A reference luminance difference is set to an almost intermediate value being the luminance difference which needs contour enhancement the most. The luminance difference whose difference with a reference luminance difference is the minimum is selected among the luminance differences with the adjacent pixels. In a region where the selected luminance difference becomes the reference luminance difference, a contour is enhanced the most. In a region where the difference between the selected luminance difference and the reference luminance difference becomes relatively large, a contour enhancement amount is relatively reduced.
