Aspects of the present is directed to the use of LIDAR Data to identify characteristics of vegetation. In that regard, it provides a method that identifies the location of Individual Units of vegetation from raw LIDAR Data.In One embodiment, the method includes selecting a position coordinates represented in Data generated by a lidar return Signal. Then, it makes a determination on whether the position coordinates is selected within a geographical area assigned to a unit of vegetation previously identified.If the position coordinates of selected is not within the geographic area assigned to a unit of vegetation previously identified, the method determines the position coordinates of selected is associated with a new unit of vegetation. In this instance, it generates a digital representation of the new unit of vegetation.
