The process known as multi-course paving, where two courses, namely a base course or binder course and a wearing course, are f ormed simultaneously to provide a road surf ace, requires the use of special multi-course pavers. Such multi-course pavers have to date been f ormed from a standard paver which is equipped with an add-on device. The add-on device can only be used in combination with the multi-course paver. The invention makes provision to f orm a multi-course paver f rom two independent pavers, namely a lower base paver (10) and an upper paver (11) saddled thereon using the piggyback principle. Both the base paver (10) and the upper paver (11) can be used as stand-alone pavers f or producing single-layer road surf aces. Theref ore, the invention does not require any costly add-on devices, which can be used only f or multi-course paving, f or paving the second course of the road surface.
