This invention claims the identification of a novel 1.7kb nucleic acid fragment encoding orally insecticidal XnGroEL protein from Xenorhabdus nematophila. It involves the cloning of 1.7 kb XnGroEL gene in an expression plasmid followed by its transformation in E. coli BL21DE3 cells. Furthermore, XnGroEL protein was purified and found to have growth inhibitory and insecticidal property for Helicoverpa armigera larvae. XnGroEL binds to larval gut brush border membrane vesicles. Therefore, extends its findings by demonstrating the ά-chitin binding activity of purified recombinant XnGroEL protein.
