The engine has a cooling jacket (1) arranged in a cylinder block, and another cooling jacket (2) arranged in a cylinder head, where cooling fluid flows through the cooling jackets along a longitudinal direction of the engine. The cylinder block and the cylinder head have separate inlets (6, 8) and outlets (7, 9) provided for the cooling fluid and communicated with the respective cooling jackets in the cylinder block and cylinder head. Flow transfer units (11) are arranged between the cooling jackets. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an internal-combustion engine.
