Nucleic acid molecule encoding the plant type II ribosome inactivating protein (RIP), riproximin, that exhibits antineoplastic activity, which is: (a) a nucleic acid molecule encoding a polypeptide comprising the amino acid sequence as depicted in figure 7 or figure 11 (SEQ ID NO: 3 or 4 or 6); (b) a nucleic acid molecule comprising the nucleotide sequence as depicted in Figure 6 (a) (SEQ ID NO: 1) or (b) (SEQ ID NO: 2) or in Figure 11 (SEQ ID NO: 5); (c) a nucleic acid molecule encoding a polypeptide whose sequence is at least 80% identical to the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide encoded by a nucleic acid molecule specified in (a) or (b); (d) a nucleic acid molecule whose sequence differs from the sequence of a nucleic acid molecule from (a) to (c) due to the degeneracy of the genetic code.
