An anvil assembly (100) for an instrument for surgical circular stapling (10), the anvil assembly comprising: an anvil part (102) having an annular staple forming surface (112) and an inner wall part ( 142); an ordered annular arrangement of staples forming cavities (120) formed on the staple forming surface; an axis (104) which is pivotally secured to the anvil part, the axis having a longitudinal geometric axis (x) extending from the anvil member in substantially perpendicular direction with respect to the staple forming surface when the part of anvil is in alignment with the axis; a shoulder (172) protruding inwardly from the inner wall portion, the proximal surface of the shoulder providing a rigid surface (174) of contact with the blade arranged concentrically within the staple forming surface; and an annular slope surface part (144) disposed adjacent to the staple forming surface and in proximal position of the rigid contact surface with the blade, the sloping surface part inclined, radially inward and in the distal direction from the staple forming surface to guide the blade member to alignment.
