A process for producing CF 3I, the process comprising reacting a selected iodine source the group consisting of hydrogen iodide, iodine and iodine monochloride with a selected reactant from the group consisting of the formula: CF 3 R where R is selected from a group consisting of -SH, -SS-CF3 and -S-Si- (CH3) 3 in the presence of a metal salt catalyst.
