A method of detecting bladder cancer in an individual comprising: evaluating the level of expression of a 20P1F12 / TMPRSS2 gene product in a biological sample; evaluate the level of expression of a 20P1F12 / TMPRSS2 gene product in a corresponding normal sample; comparing the level of expression of the gene product in the biological sample with respect to that of the corresponding normal sample, wherein the gene product is a protein comprising the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 2 or an mRNA encoding the amino acid sequence, and where an increase in the expression levels of the gene product in the biological sample compared to the corresponding normal sample is indicative of bladder cancer.
