A compound of formula (I): M-D1-L-D2 wherein D1 is a first dye moiety whose fluorescence properties may be modulated to be suitable as a donor in an arrangement of energy transfer, wherein D1 is capable of transferring energy to D2 and is selected from dyes of coumarin dyes, benzocoumarin dyes, acridone dyes, xanthine dyes, phenoxazine dyes, rhodamine dyes, merocyanine dyes and cyanine, preferably dyes xanthine dyes cyanine; D2 is a second dye moiety suitable as an acceptor in an arrangement of energy transfer with said first dye, and is selected from dyes of coumarin dyes, benzocoumarin dyes, acridone dyes, xanthine dyes, phenoxazine dyes rhodamine dyes, merocyanine dyes and cyanine dyes; M is an enzyme cleavable group chosen to modulate the fluorescence properties of D1, wherein M comprises a substrate for a first cleavage enzyme; L is a linking group comprising 2-200 linked atoms, wherein said linking group is a cleavable linker and includes the enzyme cleavable group P which is a substrate for a second enzyme cleavage different from said first cleavage enzyme.
