CELLULAR SIMULTANEOUS VOICE AND DATA TRANSMISSION INCLUDING DIGITAL SIMULTANEOUS VOICE AND DATA (DSVD) MODEM

A system and method of simultaneously conducting adata transfer and a voice call between a mobile station anda radio telecommunications network having a mobileswitching center (MSC) which serves the mobile station. Afirst embodiment includes a landline digital simultaneousvoice and data (DSVD) modem associated with the mobilestation which generates DSVD source signal and linenegotiation protocols. The DSVD source signal and linenegotiation protocols are encapsulated into circuit modeRadio Link Protocol (RLP) signals and transmitted to theMSC. An interworking function (IWF) associated with theMSC translates the circuit mode RLP signals into signals ina landline telecommunications protocol. In anotherembodiment, the voice call is carried over the airinterface from the mobile station to the network in onetimeslot, and the data transfer is carried in at least oneadditional timeslot on the same voice channel. In otherembodiments, two voice channels may be allocated to thesame mobile station. The voice call to a first party iscarried from the mobile station to the network on one voicechannel, and the data transfer to the first or a secondparty is carried on the second voice channel. The MSChands off the two voice channels together, but releasesthem individually when either the voice call or the datatransfer is completed.
