The present invention relates to a method of sedating a patient while in theintensive care unit (ICU). The method comprisesadministering dexmedetomidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof toa patient in need thereof for a sufficient time period.Further, the present invention relates to a method of sedating a patient inthe ICU by administering dexmedetomidine or a pharmaceuticallyacceptable salt thereof, wherein dexmedetomidine is essentially the soleactive agent or the sole active agent.
