The biological effects of the cytokine TNF are mediated by binding toreceptors on the surface of cells. This disclosure describesnew proteins and polynucleotides that promote enzymatic cleavage and releaseof TNF receptors. Also provided are method for identifyingadditional compounds that influence TNF receptor shedding. As the activeingredient in a pharmaceutical composition, the products of thisinvention increase or decrease TNF signal transduction, thereby alleviatingthe pathology of disease.
