A quilting machine (10) is providedhaving at least one set of single needle stitchforming elements. The stitch formingelements include a needle (36) and a looper (39)mounted on separate heads (35, 38) that areindependently moveable on a bridge (30)transversely relative to the panel. The bridge (30)is longitudinally moved by a servo (32) andthe heads (35, 38) are transversely movedon the bridge (30) by separate servos (43,44). A controller (60) drives the servos tochain stitch patterns and differentially movethe heads transversely to account fortransverse needle deflection. The drives of theneedle and looper are phased to compensate forlongitudinal needle deflection. The controllermay store empirically determined data andrespond to control signals and/or sensors (81,82) to determine or predict deflection andcalculate needle deflection compensation.
