The invention relates to 17.beta. lupanederivatives of formula (I): wherein R1 andX are as defined herein, and pharmaceuticallyacceptable salts and solvates thereof. Thesecompounds exhibit significant anti-HIV activity.Thus, the invention also relates to methodsfor prevention or treatment of HIV infection byadministering therapeutically effective amountsof a compound of formula (I), or a pharmaceuticallyacceptable salt or solvate thereof to a subjectin need of such treatment.
