BASES DICTIONARY FOR LOW COMPLEXITY MATCHING PURSUITS DATA CODING AND DECODING

A method for selecting a base dictionary for image coding, such as coding utilizing wavelet transforms and matching pursuits. An initial final dictionary (309) is provided which may be empty or may contain entries previously determined such as the Dirac function (Unit impulse) which is known to be a generally useful codebook entry for many applications. A candidate dictionary entries are determined (310). Many different codebooks, and/or dictionary entries may be utilized within the candidate dictionary (310), as a starting point for selecting an optimal dictionary set (330) for coding and decoding data. The candidate dictionary selection may depend upon the type of data to be coded. For instance, one set of dictionary entries may be utilized for audio data, and another for images.
