The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for mapping sources that locally modify the geomagnetic field. The aim of the invention is to design an apparatus and devise a method for mapping sources locally modifying the geomagnetic field which overcome the disadvantages of the prior art and which, unlike 2D magnetic field mapping devices with SQUID systems, especially make it possible to determine the actual depth and size of the objects to be detected. Said aim is achieved by equipping the apparatus with highly sensitive sensors (1) for measuring the gradient of the geomagnetic field, a position measuring unit (31) for determining the location of the sensors above the measured field that is to be mapped, a data processing and storing unit (5), and a non-magnetic moving and supporting unit (6) on which the sensors, the position measuring unit, and the data processing and storing unit are mounted. At least two sensors (11) are provided which face in the same direction and are disposed vertically on top of each other at a distance from one another in order to measure the local magnetic field gradient. Furthermore, the signals of all sensors and of the position measuring unit can be simultaneously recorded.
