At starting and during first rotation of the crankshaft (23), cylinder (C1) operation is controlled in 'purge' mode (Mp) by controlling : near top dead center (PMH), closure of escape valves (19) and opening (OA) of an admission valve (18); near to bottom dead center (PMB), closure (FA) of admission valves and opening (OE) of an escape valve to siphon part of the burnt gas which has filled the admission circuit (16). When an engine start request is received and before starting, as a function of engine operating parameters, it is determined if it is necessary to control the operation of a cylinder in 'purge' mode. The 'purge' mode is used uniquely after at least an unsuccessful test start without 'purge' mode. The 'purge' mode is used as a failure mode when the chance of starting without 'purge' mode is zero. The 'purge' mode is quitted after a determined number of crankshaft rotations, the number of rotations is calculated as a function of the engines operating parameters or as a function of the anticipated starting duration and/or as a function of the anticipated duration in which probability of starting is low.
