An intramedullary implantation system (10) includes a nail (12) with a head (30) having a first locking element (50). A targeting guide (14) includes a tubular body (18) and a bore (26) with first (24) and second (22) open ends. A locking device (16) includes a shaft (36) with a distal end (32) having a non- threaded second locking element (38) such that the locking device has a first angular orientation relative to the tubular body in which the first and second locking elements are engaged to secure the nail to the targeting guide. The locking device has a second angular orientation relative to the tubular body in which the first locking element is disengaged from the second locking element.
