A current supply for the electro-dynamic brakes (4) in a railway shunting yard has each brake connected to a capacitor (2) which has sufficient stored charge to operate the brake for a set number of times, e.g. for braking all the carriages on the ramp in case of power supply failure. The capacitors are charged from the supply via a rectifying stage (1) and all the capacitors in the yard can be linked by a ring main, with the capacitors in parallel. The line supply needs only to be sufficient to cover the average load of the braking system. The power system can be backed by UPS units powered by accumulators.
