Controlling a phacoemulsification surgical system by transitioning between pulse and burst modes

Methods of manipulating pulses of ultrasonic energy for use with an ophthalmic surgical device are provided. These include variants of pulse mode (1700) and burst mode (1500) pulses, and switching or transforming between the two, in response to the actuation of a controller such as a foot pedal.
