The invention relates to a diamond-containing additive to be added to electrolyte for electrochemically depositing composite metal-based coatings, which additive comprises a disperse phase in the form of the aqueous dispersion of diamond-containing material particles, and to a method for producing said additive. The electrolyte with the above-mentioned additive and the method for electrochemically depositing composite metal-diamond coatings from said electrolyte make it possible to obtain a coating comprising the particles of a synthetic carbonaceous diamond-containing material which are dispersed in a metal film, wherein said carbonaceous material contains carbon in the form of utrafine diamond nuclei encapsulated by a roentgen amorphous carbon-containing shell, the particles of the material have, on the surface thereof, surface functional groups containing oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen at a ratio between the mass of nuclei and the shell mass of (60-92):(40-8) respectively, and the material composition includes the following elements which are chemically bonded with the ions of the coating metal : 86-94 mass% carbon, 1.5-5.0 hydrogen, 1.8-4.5 mass% nitrogen and 2.0-8.5 oxygen.
