The invention relates to a device including a reactor (1), an agitator (2), means for measuring the concentration of oxygen (3), a container (4) housing activated sludge, means (5) for dosing a biodegradable organic substrate and a pump (6) for filling and emptying the reactor (1). The aforementioned dosing means (5) comprise a cylinder having a piston (17), actuated by a motor (15) by means of a shaft. In addition, a controller device (16) controls the movement of the piston inside the cylinder. The device of the invention can be used to determine the oxygen uptake rate of activated sludge for different pre-determined concentrations of a biodegradable organic substrate, by means of the following steps: loading an activated sludge into a reactor (1), homogenising the activated sludge, measuring the oxygen uptake in the endogenous phase, injecting a pre-determined quantity of the substrate, and measuring the oxygen uptake in the exogenous phase.
