The invention relates to a method of determining a polarization curve (18) describing the voltage/current dependency of a fuel cell system, in which value pairs (16, 17) are formed from simultaneously detected and mutually assigned measured values for voltage (12) and current (14), and in which an approximating function is taken as basis, by means of which the polarization curve (18) is determined on the basis of at least a selection of value pairs (16, 17), characterized in that a nonlinear function is used as the approximating function, the coefficients of which are determined in order to determine the polarization curve (18). The invention further relates to a method of operating a fuel cell system and to a fuel cell system.
