The method involves determining a polarization curve (2), which describes a voltage-current-dependence, of a fuel cell. The polarization curve is approximated by a linear function (3) under a preset condition. A detected operation of the fuel cell approaching into a full load region, and an instantaneous fuel cell voltage (U) detected below a minimum fuel cell voltage (Umin) are provided as the condition. A fuel cell current (Iumin) with a minimum voltage of the fuel cell is determined based on the linear function.
