The invention provides a method for obtaining drinking water from a liquid fraction of human or animal faeces, comprising the purification of the liquid fraction using a biological filtration process. The process furthermore comprises a step of reducing the ammonia content of the liquid fraction. The step of reducing the ammonia content comprises the steps of: storing the liquid fraction in a storage tank prior to the biological filtration process, mixing the liquid fraction with porous granules in the storage tank to provide a mixture, with a bacterial culture being present on the porous granules, and aerating the mixture of the granules and the liquid fraction to stimulate the growth of bacteria on the granules for the purpose of effecting the decomposition of ammonia with the aid of the bacterial culture. The invention furthermore provides a bioreactor unit, a storage tank and a culturing process for use in a water-purification method as described above.
