The invention provides methods for predicting oxalate and struvite stone formatio in an animal by determining the amount of selected nutrients in a food for consumption b the animal, the amount of selected urine metabolites, and/or the urine pH for the animal an predicting oxalate and/or struvite stone formation using a formula that equates the amoun of such nutrients, metabolites, or urine pH to the likelihood that an animal will form oxalat and/or struvite stones.
