A print tone control assisting method and apparatus, and a print tone control method and apparatus determine matching of print colors more easily and adequately regardless of an observation environment, and control the amounts of inks supplied to match the matched colors. An image to be printed by a printer (1) is displayed with the tone of a print sample on a screen (12a) of a monitor (12) as a target color image. The colors of a printed matter (15) are measured with a sensor (14). The color measurement values influence the individual device profiles of the sensor (14) and the monitor (12), so that the color image is displayed with the measured tone on the monitor screen (12a) as a detected color image. Simulated changes in the amounts of the supplied inks influence the device profiles to change the tone of the detected color image to the tone according to the simulated changes in the amounts of the supplied inks, so that the detected color image is displayed on the monitor screen (12a) as a simulatively changed color image, thereby ensuring matching determination referring to the monitor screen (12a).
