The invention relates to a method which allows operation at different data rates in one transmission direction and in both transmission directions in a bidirectional transmission system with point-to-multipoint connections. In the downstream direction, a central network unit (OLT) transmits respective downstream signals (DS) at at least two different bit rates to a multiplicity of subscriber network units (ONUl, ONU2, ONUN) within downstream frames. In the upstream direction, upstream signals (US) are transmitted at at least two different bit rates within upstream frames. The inventive implementations of the multi-bit-rate operation can be applied particularly to passive optical networks in which time-division-multiplex signals are continuously transmitted in downstream frames in the downstream direction and bursts are transmitted in upstream frames in the upstream direction. To this end, the invention requires only slight changes to the frame structures specified in the G. 984.3 standard.
