The method involves attaching an inner front cover (23) to a front side of a material web roll (3.1) e.g. paper web roll, by a covering system (10), where the web roll is coated with a packing material (4) in a winding station (2). Images are generated from a monitoring region (24) in a temporal sequence from a perspective view, where the monitoring region is characterized by a movement path of the web roll between the winding station and a unit (13) for positioning and attaching the outer front cover. The images are analyzed on a deviation representing an absence of the inner front cover. An independent claim is also included for a roll packaging system comprising a winding station, a covering system and a unit for positioning and attaching an outer front cover.
