A method for detecting and coping with an error of CAN(Controller Area Network) communication is provided to diagnose the error for the CAN communication by checking transmission and reception of a vehicle control duration message. The recognition of a first bus off is sensed periodically in an ECU through an inner register(S202). When the first bus off is sensed, a CAN controller is initialized or the register is reset, and the related parameter is re-initialized. When a second bus off is generated after re-initialization, the communication is temporarily stopped and the failure content is stored(S209). The communication is stopped again in case a third bus off is continuously generated by repeatedly performing the communication after a predetermined time elapses from the second bus off(S214). After the communication is stopped again, the restrictive function to share the minimum information is performed by entering a limp-home mode and the control parameter to be received in the communication is set to a default value(S220).
