METHOD FOR PERFORMING SOFTER HANDOVER IN BROADBAND WIRELESS COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

A method for performing softer handover in a broadband wireless communication system is provided to perform communication with the optimum signal quality when executing the softer handover operation between areas of each distributed antenna dispersed around the same base station to guarantee the mobility of a mobile terminal. An MOB_NBR-ADV message, including the identification number of an antenna which is adjacent to an arbitrary mobile terminal, is received(600). The corresponding mobile terminal scans the strength of received signals, received from antennas which are adjacent around an area where the terminal is located, and then selects a specific antenna with which the terminal communicates with the optimum quality(610). The mobile terminal searches the location of the selected specific antenna to which the terminal is handed off(614). If the specific antenna exists within the coverage of the same base station as that of the mobile terminal, the mobile terminal transmits an MOB_MSHO_REQ message including the identification number of the selected antenna to a serving base station(616). The serving base station adds the received identification number to a diversity set of the mobile terminal, and then multicasts the same frame to a plurality of antennas included in the diversity set(618).
