A personal authentication method and device. A laser light flux is expanded and applied to an eye fundus and light reflected from retinal blood vessels of the eye fundus and blood vessel layers in eye fundus tissue is focused as a laser speckle on an image sensor by using an optical system. The amount representing the speed of a change in time of the amount of light received in each pixel of the laser speckle is calculated, and a blood flow map of the eye fundus is obtained by using the calculated value as a two-dimensional map. At least one of the following information is used to compare and verify it with personal data: blood flow distribution data observed in the blood flow map, a pattern observed in a manner superposed on the blood flow map and to which routes of the retinal blood vessels are reflected, and data on a time lapse change of both the blood flow distribution data and the pattern. The method and device using an eye fundus blood flow velocity map have higher authentication accuracy than conventional ones.
