MODE TRANSFORMER FOR COUPLING SOI SINGLE MODE WAVEGUIDE AND OPTICAL FIBER

A mode converting structure for coupling a single mode SOI optical waveguide with an optical fiber is provided to effectively reduce a periodic focusing phenomenon of an optical beam. A mode converting structure for coupling a single mode SOI optical waveguide(400) with an optical fiber has a laminated layer structure. The mode converting structure comprises an input facet(101) of the first surface and an output facet(103) of the second surface. The mode converting structure comprises a tapered structure from the first surface to the second surface. The mode converting structure is made of materials having variable refractivity. A section of the SOI waveguide is arranged at a focusing distance of the laminated structure.
