An apparatus and a method for managing status information in a wireless instant messaging system are provided to maximize privacy performance by enabling the other parties to confirm the state information of a subscriber according to the necessity of the subscriber. A first mobile terminal(101) transmits a registration message including state information and observer information, and a second mobile terminal(102) confirms the state information that the first mobile terminal registers or updates. A presence server(300) registers or updates the state information corresponding to the observer information included in the received registration message, and transmits a notification message including the state information to the second mobile terminal.
