A composition for preventing and treating liver cirrhosis and liver fibrosis which comprises one component of Laurus nobilis containing the reynosine is provided to prevent the apoptosis or damage of the hepatocyte and induce apoptosis of hepatic stellate cell. A composition for preventing and treating liver cirrhosis and liver fibrosis comprises a Laurus nobilis or reynosine isolated from the Laurus nobilis. The daily dose of one component of the Laurus nobilis containing the reynosine is 1-200 mg/kg body weight. The Laurus nobilis extract, besides the reynosine, comprises baynol C, 3-hydroxycarvotagenone, 2-cyclohexene-1-one, methyl p-hydroxy-trans cinnamate, zaluzanin D, Cis-p-menth-1(10)-ene-2,7-diol 7-acetate, vanillin, anhydroperoxycostunolide, 14-oxomelampolide, parthenolide, or 1,5-Naphtalenediol.
