A unit and a method for operating an STB are provided to offer advanced multimedia communication application by using individualized data which are on the permanent duty within STB. A unit for operating an STB(Set Top Box)(500) operates the STB. The STB has an OS(Operation System) layer. In order to support cable network inter-connectivity and provide an application platform, the OS layer is operable. The unit for operating the STB comprises a unit for setting up one or more profiles(400) and a unit for managing one or more profiles. Each profile includes personal information and individual preference. One or more of personal information and individual preference is used to relate with social networking application. The administration comprises one or more of the production or editing of one or more profiles.
