A composition containing a hesperidin as an active ingredient is provided to protect cells from radiation such as gamma ray without cytotocixity. A composition for cell protection comprises a hesperidin of the chemical formula 1 or its pharmaceutically acceptable salt as an active ingredient. The composition recovers the reduced activity of marker enzyme in a liver tissue after radiation exposure. The radiation is X ray, alpha-ray, beta-ray or gamma-ray. The target enzyme is aspatate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), or gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (gamma-GT). A healthy food for protecting cells comprises the hesperidin or its pharmaceutically acceptable salt. The healthy food is in the form of beverage, chewing gum, or vitamin complex.
