The improved system and method enable a transmitting electronic device to explicitly indicate streams in the transmitted multimedia stream which must not be synchronised or must include a given value of synchronisation jitter. The present invention helps a receiving device understand characteristics of streams. The present invention also enables a receiving device make an informed decision on whether a synchronisation jitter value must be used when synchronising two or more streams.
