A protection system for vehicle occupants monitors the seat belt extension with the vehicle dynamics to generate control signals for the protection modules, e.g. airbag, seat belt lock etc. The control monitors the rate of change of seat belt extension, the seat occupancy, and the basic vehicle speed etc. The control system uses a map combining the different parameters and includes a driver warning system. The basic parameters are established a set interval after applying the seat belts.
