The device (1) has a reduction catalyser utilizing ammonia gas supplied by a storage medium. Two different size ammonia gas sources include a fixed ammonia storage medium (9) and a heater (10). The heater of a smaller ammonia gas source (16) is presented in the form of an electrical heater (13). The heater of a larger ammonia gas source (15) is presented in the form of a waste heat heater (14). The larger ammonia storage medium is connected with the smaller ammonia storage medium by a reloading valve (19). An independent claim is also included for a method for selective catalytic nitrogen oxide reduction in oxygen-containing exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine.
