The device has a transmitter wheel associated to a rotary component (1). A number of revolutions of the rotary component are detected. A sensor element (4) is pre-stressed with a magnet (5). Another stationary component (3) is arranged between the former component and the sensor element. The magnet assigned to the sensor element produces a background field in the sensor element, where the field is influenced by the transmitter wheel dependent on a rotational speed of the former component. The transmitter wheel is made of ferrous magnetic material.
